About me

"We do not have to love. We choose to love." M. Scott Peck

I care about your marriage, and so do you. I have been married for over 20 years, and I understand the joy that happy marriage brings. But I also understand the intentional effort that it takes to make it the best that it can be. I count it a privilege to be trusted with the unique stories of how people choose each other, and I engage wholeheartedly to help them build strong families. Helping individuals and couples learn skills that result in useful thinking, mindful living and healthy relationships is deeply satisfying to me. I enjoy working with couples who are either preparing for marriage, strengthening their connection or hoping to restore trust and wholeness.

I am a licensed therapist who practices in the metro Atlanta area. I take a strength-based, collaborative approach to marriage therapy. I believe that we all have strengths that can be leveraged as we do life with our partners. I help couples learn to like each other again, communicate more effectively, and embrace the process of growing together. I believe that marriage is a distinct relationship that warrants using distinct tools and skills to help couples talk, manage conflict, and rebuild trust. I use evidence-based assessments and practical exercises coupled with my common sensical but faith-filled insight to ensure that I optimally support couples in their desire for ‘better’.

As a strength-focused therapist who collaborates with clients in taking practical steps, I would consider it a privilege to walk with you. I bring keen awareness, empathy and steadfastness to the counseling process that facilitates insight and growth. I am a certified facilitator and trainer of the Prepare/Enrich program that focuses on building strong marriages and healthy relationships.

My fiancé and I have just recently started working with Shelly, but we are so thankful for her support. She has listened to us, made sure we are comfortable sharing, and has already helped us to understand each other better. Shelly was wonderful! She took such care and heart to tend to our needs. I first partnered with Shelly solo because I felt my marriage was in jeopardy. We then transitioned to couples counseling (with my spouse included) and Shelly helped to transform our relationship! What I particularly love is not only the sound advice, but the realistic and practical TOOLS she gave us so that we can continue to improve over time--even after our counseling ends.
