About Me

Dr. Shawn Hysten-Williams, Ed.D., LPC is an experienced psychotherapist with over a decade of experience in goal-focused approaches and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She has her masters degree in Counseling from Prairie View A & M University and a doctorate in Counseling Education from Texas Southern University. She has specialized experience in multiple areas including: Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Relationship Issues (personal & professional), anger issues, and working with individuals who have experienced trauma such as neglect or abuse. She also has expertise in couples therapy, grief therapy, and helping individual's successfully manage life transitions. One of the key approaches Dr. Hysten-Williams uses for couples’ counseling is narrative therapy which helps couples separate the problem from the person by externalizing issues of concern. This approach allows the couple to explore the past to bring to light negativities that otherwise remain hidden. By exploring conceptions and behaviors, couples gain insight into facts that have been troubling leading up to seeking professional help. The couple is able to rewrite the narrative of their relationship, thus identifying new ways to resolve issues that may arise.

Dr. Hysten-Williams has be counseling my partner and I for several months and she has been tremendously helpful in getting us to understand each other better and understand what missteps we are taking in our relationship. She offers concrete advice on how to approach these things in the future and how to stay respectful of each other. She makes us both feel heard and makes sure we hear each other. While my partner and I still have our struggles, we are much more aware than we ever have been and we are hopeful for our future.
