Poonam Melwani, LMSW, earned her master’s in social work degree at Silberman School for Social Work at Hunter College in New York and is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Michigan. She has been providing counseling to adults and adolescents struggling with various mental health-related symptoms for the past four years. Poonam has worked as a therapist at The Guidance Center helping adults manage their depression and anxiety-related symptoms.
Poonam also has a passion for working with both men and women survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. In the past, she has worked at Wayne County SAFE as a sexual assault advocate/counselor where she helped both adolescent and adults overcome their sexual assault by learning tools to manage their anxiety and fears surrounding their trauma. Poonam also has experience working with couples on managing relationship dilemmas. Poonam uses the Gottman Method to help couples communicate and improve their bond. Using the Gottman Method, couples can learn to discuss their dilemmas with their partners without fearing retaliation and overcome conflict. Couples will learn how to improve intimacy and re-develop a connection.
Poonam also has extensive experience in treating depression, anxiety, and trauma in both adults and adolescents. Poonam is trained in CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy. Poonam likes to provide insight into how the mind and body connection impacts our way of processing and communicating our emotions and thoughts. She likes to help clients accept and not fear their emotions.
Poonam uses a person-centered, eclectic and cross-cultural perspective when working with her clients as she understands each individual and each experience is unique. Poonam provides a warm, non-judgmental, and safe space for clients to share their most innermost struggles. Poonam empowers clients by helping them process their emotions, identify their strengths, and learn new healthy coping techniques to help them overcome their stressors. To become our better selves, we have to accept that life is a process of healing and growth.

Poonam has been incredibly instrumental in repairing my relationships. She gives honest feedback and somehow knows how to say the right thing every time. I am very grateful for her guidance and am so happy I decided to give online therapy a try.
So far, I am SO impressed with our marriage counselor! She really takes the time to understand the issues that we’re dealing with, respond with thoughtful and helpful messages, and challenge us to work on specific things to improve our relationship. I’m SO hopeful about the future of my marriage- for the first time in a while- thanks to Poonam:)
She has been very helpful in me and my husbands relationship issues. We both have opened up about what has bothered us and she has given us tools to improve what we are lacking. We plan to stay in counseling to continue improving our relationship.
