About Me

Hello, I am Melissa Upton.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Mississippi. I am also a National Certified Counselor with NBCC. I received my Master's and Specialist's Degree from Mississippi State University in School Counseling. I have 13 years of experience in school counseling and 24 years of experience in the public school system in Mississippi. I have worked with adolescents for 24 years. I am looking to broaden my horizon and begin a new phase in my life with more one-on-one counseling. I have observed in the past 24 years, the need for counselors in everyone’s life.
I personally have had several failed relationships and have gone through counseling myself. I believe I have some "real-life" experience in this area with difficult relationships and can relate to you in your struggles.
I have learned that relationships are hard and they take a lot of work from both people at all times. When children are involved, whether they are from the original marriage or if they are step children, that is a part of the relationship. There will be struggles because there must be relationships with the children involved and that must be addressed.
My approach is cognitive-behavioral and client-centered.

I was in an abusive marriage and trying to escape. I poured my heart out and she told me to “forgive and forget”. I told my regular therapist what she said and she was absolutely appalled by how absolutely unethical and ridiculous that was. I’d be very careful and please don’t be hesitant to try different therapists!
