About me

I have worked in a variety of family settings (single, blended, extended) and couples across all ages and multicultural backgrounds. I continue to effectively promote change and strengthens all members to improve effective communication and set appropriate boundaries to bring respect and harmony into their lives.

We are ALL living in uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic. ALL of us face unprecedented personal and professional challenges, which bring up feelings of isolation, anxiety, and sadness. I am concerned about the large proportion of children and families who need help but are not stepping up to receive care due to fear of stigma and cultural barriers.
We live in a diverse interconnected world. Culture and diversity influence many aspects of our mental health; symptoms communicate the need for care and can contribute to mental illness if not addressed.
Mental disorders occur across all cultures and at all stages of life. If not treated, risk factors increase and may lead to other health problems.
I come to private practice with 20 years of experience in the mental health field with training in cross-cultural psychology, CBT, structural family therapy, anti-racism, and crisis counseling.  While teaching AP-Psychology courses, I realized multicultural students suffered in silence due to stigma around mental health issues. I began my grassroots and launched a multicultural youth program to foster tolerance, allay fears, and promote hope for adolescents from all societies at the United Nations. www.mmcnyc.com.
I draw from various modalities. Whether from a collectivist or individualistic society, you may fear to reach out because of stigma against race, ethnicity, or religion, I believe in a universal and multicultural approach and provide culturally sensitive therapy and strongly believe that faith in our collective abilities to improve the lives of our children, adolescents and families can enable them to be mentally alert, physically healthy, emotionally secure, and socially competent, especially when fostered in a safe environment.

We've only had about 3 session with Mahroo, but still it's as though we're talking to someone who has known us forever. It really shows that Mahroo has a very deep understanding of what makes a strong relationship and we're so excited to have someone help us navigate the troubled waters of our relationship and look forward to reaching our destination with her help.
