About me

Hello! My name is Lakeiya (Kia) Cherry. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Maryland and in the District of Columbia. I have been a social worker for 13 + years. However, I have worked in the mental health field for approximately 20 years. My experience working with diverse populations has allowed me the opportunity to support individuals, groups, and families with addressing various needs such as depression, anxiety, grief, anger management, issues with communication, family discord, relationship issues, and parent-child relations. When working with couples specifically, I have provided support with dealing with issues regarding infidelity, unemployment/problems with finances, addictions, problems with communication, discord with family/children, and mental illness.

Relationships are not always easy. Healthy relationships require consistent deposits such as compromising, active listening, effective communication, acceptance, and a nonjudgmental disposition. Sometimes we become so overwhelmed with life, we don’t realize the withdrawals outweigh the deposits. As John Donne stated, “ No man is an island.” I believe we all need support from others at some point in our lives. Sometimes all you need is someone to talk to that will listen and provide guidance in a nonjudgmental and confidential manner. We can accomplish so much more in life when we have the support and motivation to do so. If you and your spouse are ready to put forth the work and have a more fulfilling relationship, I am the kind of therapist that will support you through your journey. Together, we can work towards achieving your desired goals in a manner that is best for you.

The interventions I provide are based on the couples that I am working with and the presenting dilemmas. My most utilized treatment approaches consist of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Integrative Counseling. Beyond providing evidenced-based interventions, I believe having a strong therapeutic rapport is essential to the success of the counseling process. My initial goal is to build a trusting relationship and increase your comfort level with sharing information that might not be so comfortable.

My availability primarily consists of afternoon and late evening hours during the week. I am also available on Saturdays between 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Additional availability will be offered upon request.

I wouldn’t be married without Ms. Cherry. Her approach to therapy is not only thorough but thoughtful and sincere. She is well-versed in long and short term strategies for relationship struggles. She also ensures that we are both working on our individual wellness and continually explains how this plays a role in our marriage. She is a treasure!
