About me

I received my Doctorate of Clinical Psychology at California Lutheran University. I then moved to New York, and worked at a community mental health clinic treating children, families and couples. I have extensive experience working with with couples and parents struggling with conflict in the home.

In couples therapy my goal is to make each partner feel heard, understood and cared for. Couples easily get “stuck” in patterns of communication that are no longer working for them. My role is to help couples stop the unhelpful patterns and learn new ways of communicating and actively listening to one another so that each partner’s needs are met. I enjoy helping couples identify the strengths in their relationship and building upon those. In my practice, I integrate the practical and mindful components of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) with a person-centered, relatable approach. I emphasize the impact compassion, understanding and cultural sensitivity can have in creating a safe and therapeutic environment for healing and growth.

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Dr. Kayla Nelson. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with Regain might be different.

Written on Apr 14, 2021 after therapy with Kayla for 3 months on issues concerning relationship

Dr. Nelson is not only understanding and empathetic to me and my partners experiences but provides productive useful resources that will benefit I believe both of us in the short term and long term. She has already strengthened and reframed our relationship back into a more productive healthier place. Personally I am grateful for her kindness , smarts, and grace through everything. Anyone and everyone would be lucky to work with such a compassionate individual through any therapeutic process. I may be biased in my response, but she is the best clinician I have ever been around. She has reminded me to be more mindful in ways that are beneficial individually and collectively for my overall growth.
