About me

I am a licensed clinical social worker with over 30 years of involvement with the mental health field. I have 19 years of experience at the independent practice level of licensure. I have worked with a wide variety of client problems including: depression, PTSD, personality disorders, parenting, dysfunctional childhood issues, anger issues, and dissociation. I have helped individuals cope with psychotic symptoms. I have helped individuals deal with spiritual issues, even though I do not focus on religious beliefs and I don't consider my work to be "Christian counseling."

My style is warm, compassionate, flexible, and respectful. I take a non-judgmental approach to client problems. My approach is influenced by the person-centered therapy developed by Carl Rogers. I have also been influenced by psychodynamic ideas, but I am not primarily a psychodynamic therapist. I have been influenced by the work of Milton Erickson, who was primarily known for hypnotherapy, but I seldom use hypnotherapy per se. Milton Erickson and Carl Rogers held in common the belief that the client has the solutions inside, and the therapist helps them find the solutions that are right for the client, so I rarely use advice giving except in emergency situations. What I think is the best advice possible, may not be the right answer for the client. I use continual observation and continue to evaluate the situations, so that I don't form an opinion about the problems and refuse to modify that opinion as the therapy progresses.

I feel confident that I can help you find the answers and the changes that you are seeking. I look forward to working with you.

When working with couples I try to help them learn to communicate better. Sometimes it is important for them to remember what it was that brought them together in the beginning of their relationship; the relationship has become so strained, that they have forgotten what they like about each other. Their communication has declined to the point where they only listen to the other to come up with a negative response. It is important that they increase communication, slow down the communication and really listen to one another.
