About me

Hello! My name is April McElroy. I am a Licensed Marital and Family Therapy practicing in Tulsa, OK. I received my Undergraduate degree in Psychology in the year 2000 from Southern Connecticut State University. I obtained my Master's of Arts Degree in Marital and Family Therapy in 2015 from Southern Nazarene University. I have experience working with severely mentally ill individuals in the residential setting. I also have experience working in the Inpatient setting with individuals struggling with mental illness and substance abuse issues.

I want to say that I immensely enjoy working with Couples and Marital concerns and this is why I have chosen Marital and Family Therapy as my focus of Therapy. I understand how Couples can get lost in the perils of Marriage and making sure those vows are honored; yet confusion about common goals and communication problems can make honoring those vows very challenging.
I want to offer you an opportunity to explore with you the issues that you struggle with in your Relationship. Utilizing an approach called Rogerian (Person Centered ) I will use Unconditional Positive Regard during the sessions to adopt a "come as you are" approach to helping both partners heal from past traumas that are interfering with the peace within the relationship. I will help model a condition of unconditional acceptance so that each person can feel at peace within themselves about their own issues so that the other partner will feel the peace and will also work to find their sense of inner peace as well. Marriage isn't perfect, there are always ups and downs, falls backs, and fall outs; but through the healing process, we can make those bumps in the road a little less manageable.

She is wonderful. She is an attentive listener. I feel heard and she gives me space to process what I am thinking and feeling.

April provided a strategic approach which allowed both my partner and I to not only feel safe and not judged, but also the freedom to arrive at our own conclusions. She asks relevant questions and provided solid insights, getting to the underlying issues. My partner and I were not communicating effectively, causing a lot of misunderstanding and pain. Our conversations are now more open as we have become more vulnerable and honest with ourselves and one another. We've been giving each other the time and patience to make progress and grow. We realized that we had both caused a lot of unintentional harm to not only each other, but ourselves and the relationship. April's insight helped immensely and she knows what she's doing as a professional. Thank you again April! You are awesome at what you love to do and it shows!

April is gentle, responsive, and professional. She has used a range of techniques to elicit breakthroughs in our individual and couples sessions. I was skeptical about therapy via video, because I didn’t know if it would be possible to experience a therapist warmth and empathy or for a counselor to interpret our individual and shared meta communications!

All those concerns disappeared without minutes. April’s attuned insights, sensitive responses and thoughtful questions are guiding my husband and I to individual and shared discoveries that are helping us create the strongest bond we’ve ever had!
