About me

Reaching out for couples counseling can feel vulnerable—especially when communication has become strained or repetitive. Many couples come in feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure how to talk without things escalating. My goal is to create a calm, respectful space where both partners feel heard and supported.

I have a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and over 20 years of experience working with couples and families. I’m also a spouse, a father, a U.S. Army veteran, and a recreational sailor. My professional training and life experience help me understand how relationships are shaped by stress, expectations, communication styles, and the patterns we fall into over time.

I take a practical, solution-focused approach to challenges such as ongoing conflict, emotional distance, trust issues, life transitions, and differing needs or goals. I lean heavily on evidence-based treatments like CBT and Gottman Method family therapy because I like the practical approach and opportunity to use reading, videos, and worksheets to build skills between sessions. Don't worry though—we'll keep the process conversational rather than clinical and I promise you won’t feel diagnosed or blamed.

If you’d like, schedule an initial session with me. We can talk about what’s been difficult, what you’re hoping for, and whether working together feels like a good fit for both of you.

Alan is friendly, engaging, and very knowledgeable. Alan listens intently, always gives helpful, relevant feedback, and has been a great asset to my partner and I’s relationship. I would recommend Alan to anyone looking for a counselor.

I’m a person that was thought as a man you handle your emotions and be strong. As I aged trauma is something I’m realizing that exist. And comes back to you and you think your coping but your just masking. Mr. Hoffman, makes me feel hurd. And eases me while I talk to him. He breaks down everything and is knowledgeable and gets you to comprehend. Has answers, workbooks. And highly recommend him.
