I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor who has worked in the mental health field since 1991 when I began as a psychiatric technician at the Wyoming State Hospital. I also worked as a case manager for Valley Behavioral Health in various settings through the years. These past experiences inspired me to become more educated in the mental health field and become a therapist.
I received a BS in psychology and anthropology (cultural anthropology with a strong background in anthropology of religion) from the University of Utah in 2012 and an MS in clinical mental health counseling from the University of Phoenix in 2016.
I have experience as a therapist working in the mental health field as well as substance abuse field and worked at Project Reality which is a methadone clinic as an intern and at Odyssey House and Cornerstone Counseling as a primary therapist in residential and outpatient settings working in the substance abuse field. I have also worked at private practice settings with individual clients, adults, teens, families and couples. I received my certification to work with domestic violence perpetrators as well as victims in 2018 and worked with these populations as well.
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as well as solution-oriented approaches in my therapy. I also utilize art, existential and narrative therapies. Due to my anthropology background, I enjoy working with individuals from various ethnic and religious backgrounds and I am culturally sensitive and informed in my practice. I also have experience working with the LGBTQ community and I am a member of the LGBTQ-Affirmative psychotherapists Guild of Utah. I am also a member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association. My style of therapy involves a client-centered approach working on healing, gaining clarity and insight into feelings, working on authenticity and learning skills such as mindfulness which can create a better quality of life. I am an advocate for self-care and promote this through psycho-education and encouragement. I would love to assist you in doing these things by creating a strong and healthy therapeutic alliance.
In my spare time, I love to spend time with my partner-in-life who is my best friend, my grown children and five cats, cooking, entertaining, collecting antiques and art, as well as writing and watching movies. I occasionally like an interesting adventure!
