About me

Greetings couples. Looking for a counselor to come alongside your relationship is an important step. The fact that you two are searching is commendable in and of itself. You both are considering opening yourselves and your relationship struggles – possibly something you both have never done before – to a stranger initially. Your options are limitless and it may feel a little overwhelming. You both want and should have the best counseling for your relationship. Rest assured that all of these counselors from which you can choose are capable, competent, and licensed. All of us have years of education and many more years of experience in some cases. Yet, that does not mean that everyone is necessarily “right” for you two. Finding that a counselor is not “right” is no failure of yours or theirs. It simply was not the right fit. So, how can you both best determine if you’ve picked the right one? Like any significant relationship, it can take time to decide. Some things you may want to consider in the process is whether or not the experience and education of that counselor match with the particular issue with which you are seeking assistance. Some counselors have areas of focus that they are very skilled in and other areas in which they are not so skilled. You may also consider style differences. Do you prefer more directive and prescriptive counseling or process space to allow you to come to your own conclusions? Finally, and perhaps most importantly, do you feel heard, validated, and supported as you open yourself up? Is it fair and equal? For relationship/marriage counseling the relationship is the “client,” not necessarily the individual. Is that reflected in your sessions? So, as you browse profiles at this moment, you are considering an important question for your relationship. Please allow me the opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself to help you begin finding the answer.

My name is Robert (Rob) Gould. I am a Missouri Licensed Professional Counselor with a little over 10 years of experience. I have had the privilege to provide counseling for individuals (children, adolescents, adults) couples, and families in various settings including in-home, private practice, hospitals, and correctional institutions. Over the years I have met people from all walks in life just trying to cope with the human condition in the best way possible; addictions, trauma from abuse, relationship difficulties, coping with grief and loss, or even struggling with a significant psychological disorder. For relationship and marriage counseling I employ emotionally focused therapy techniques to process through issues and problems. My goal is to meet the relationship unit I have the opportunity to counsel exactly where it is without any preconceived notions or agendas. I wish to validate, listen, and respect the individuals in the context of the relationship first – then aid, assist, and support in achieving whatever goal desired for your future. My style is one that can match the need at the time. Sometimes it is an open process and sometimes it is directive. This is for us to determine as we get to know one another and begin unpacking the complexity of whatever problem brings your relationship to counseling.

It is my intention that if we get paired, or you both choose me as your counselor, that you two will be met with warmth and empathy. You both are making an important choice to begin living your best life possible- together and I am glad to have the opportunity to help in whatever way I possibly can.

My partner and I joke that we’re in a thruple now, with Rob. Great sense of humor, easy going, disarming when necessary, and has helped my partner and I get on the same page with regards to communication. We both feel like we can be ourselves with him and have made a ton of progress. I hate to say we kind of needed to be handheld a little in the beginning but we did, and Rob has been almost like a “friend” to us. Now we can’t really imagine our lives/relationship without him. :)

I have done so many types of therapy over the course of 20 years, and Rob is fantastic. We are a tough couple, with some deep rooted issues, and Rob is fantastic at assessing exactly the approach we need. He's fair, objective, and meets you exactly where you are. We are so glad we found him.

I want to say that rob is amazing. I’ve been with him for over a year and this has been the best therapeutic experience I’ve ever had. I started with Rob at basically the lowest point in my life and he has rode this journey with me every step of the way. He has laughed with me, been patient when I cried, and helped talk me back down when my anxiety was taking me to very dark places. He’s listened when I told him I needed him to check me when I was doing things that was taking me away from my goals. I cannot thank rob enough for being with me on this journey of not only putting my broken pieces back together but helping me find the love I needed from within. He’s been my rock throughout this last year and there are no words to say how much he has helped me and my life.
