About Me

I hold 2 licenses. I am both a licensed Professional Counselor and a Registered Dietitian. I offer my clients the wisdom of experience combined with the most current processes in the field, from a holistic perspective. I honor the values, spirituality, and chosen sexual and gender identity of the couples I serve. I strive to be anti-racist and will acknowledge the impact of historical and multi-generational trauma on the individual in the present. I work from the deep belief that our connection to our history is relevant and valuable in the healing journey. I help clients identify how their cultural heritage manifests in their relationship.
Helping clients identify and heal from trauma that is inherent in a failing relationship is at the core of the relationship therapy I provide. I use multiple research based therapies including polyvagal theory, neuro-psychological education, narrative therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. I place a heavy emphasis on communication using and teaching Non-Violent Communication skills, and giving the couple the tools to be a me, a you, and an us.
I help couples identify their needs, then provide tools and strategies at each session to create a bond that is safe, respectful and healthy. By being focused in the present with the immediate goal of ceasing to wound the other partner, clients are able to begin to reestablish trust if there is mutual commitment. This feels hopeful. My approach is highly respectful, straight forward and based in relationship, safety and science.

Reviews

Written by L.O. on Feb 18, 2021 after counseling with Monica for 6 months on issues concerning relationship

Monica has been extremely helpful to me. She is very knowledgeable and is able to communicate with my husband and I on vastly different levels . She at times has taught me things from just watching her responses. I feel as if I have a wise objective observer in my pocket that will call me on my own rationalizations with grace . This has become a safe space to communicate with my husband when I feel vulnerable. She equally points out areas to improve and has helped me improve myself significantly while helping my relationship. She has gracefully brought us to the place to talk about the hard issues . We are both grateful. I’m truly surprised that this method with texting and video sessions could be so impactful. But I think it’s better than traditional weekly sessions by far.
