About me

Hello, I’m Michele D'Angelo. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of New York, and I have been working in the mental health field for the past 10 years. I have a strong desire regarding sustainability of a viable healthy marriage relationship. Couples often run into difficulty because they get stuck in negative patterns of interaction that become rigid and can take on a life of their own. Therapy for couples can help identify these patterns or cycles, and the emotions that lead each partner to approach and react to the other in ways that keep the cycle going. This understanding can then be used to help the partners avoid these cycles and find ways of relating that allow them to have a closer, more intimate connection. I have experience working with straight, gay, and lesbian couples as well as cross-cultural couples—those where the partners are from different cultural backgrounds.

My goal in therapy is to support my clients with tapping into their personal essence and resources, to live a more effective, relational and creative life. My counseling style is compassionate, warm, empathetic and behaviorally focused. I tailor my sessions based on the needs of my client, utilizing a collaborative approach with cognitive-behavioral and person-centered models. It is my fundamental belief that martial relationships are inherently structured within the context of the strengths that each partner brings to the relationship. These critical of attributes of a healthy marriage are grounded in three essential components.

My approach to working with couples is rooted in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT is a couples therapy that has substantial empirical support for its effectiveness. EFT emphasizes the importance of emotional engagement, secure attachment, and responsiveness between partners in healthy relationships. It helps couples develop these capacities and overcome negative, repetitive, and rigid patterns of interaction that prevent them from having a closer and more caring relationship. It enables partners to recognize and avoid getting stuck in these patterns, to have a deeper understanding of their own and each other’s feelings, and to find new ways of being with each other that facilitate a stronger bond and a more fulfilling connection.

I truly appreciate you reaching out for help for the sake of your relationship. It takes courage and strength to take this first step, and it is my personal goal to help you see it through. If you feel this is the right time and place for you to make a change, I am here for you to assist in facilitating that, and I would love nothing more to be the guiding light through that process.

I look forward to working with you.
