Michael James

About Me

I am a licensed clinical social worker in the State of Louisiana and have worked in behavioral health since 2015. Prior to my transition into mental health settings, I worked in community health in NYC where I also earned my master’s degree in clinical social work at NYU. I moved back home to New Orleans to participate in the post-Katrina revival and have a private practice in Mid-City.

I have experience working with couples around repairing trust after infidelity, conflict negotiation within the unit/within the larger family system, open communication skills practice, and intimacy barriers. I find that often times couples struggle with problem identification, goal clarity, and decision-making consensus -- allow me to teach (while you both practice) the art of bargaining and bartering. Sometimes having a third neutral party can be the fresh perspective needed to get unstuck.

My interventions draw from eclectic theoretical sources, however my preferred modalities for treatment are motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral, solution-focused and acceptance commitment therapy. I like to use humor to balance some of the heavy content and promote a warm, therapeutic alliance. Most people find that my directness is refreshing and candid; I like to ask the tough questions and do the deeper dives into the content of our sessions.

I look forward to working together with you soon.
