Hi! I'm Dr. Melanie Person. I am a licensed mental health counselor in both Idaho and Washington with over 12 years of experience providing therapy to individuals, couples, and families. I love the work that I get to do with my clients and feel so fortunate to have found my life's calling. Through the years, I have witnessed many amazing personal transformations in individuals from all walks of life, yet my most cherished work has been with the couples I have served. The unique nature and training required to provide couples counseling facilitates a opportunities for movement in the therapy process. One of the reasons I seek working with couples is the progress I have seen due to the urgency of most couple issues. I know that seeing a counselor can be intimidating for some and exciting for others. Regardless of how you view the therapy process, it is important for you to understand that my primary objective is to establish a good working relationship with my clients and in working with a couple, that client is primarily your relationship. This means that it is not my objective to aligns with any party, but instead focus on what each individual is doing for and to my client, their relationship. The awareness gathered through this understanding of the relationship allows for clients to make whatever choices they feel will best serve them.
I primarily work in private practice settings and am also a professor in a graduate counselor training program, where I get a lot of joy out of training the next generation of counselors. I have experience working with a wide range of client issues including depression, anxiety, relationship and self-esteem issues, and life transitions. Through my private practice, I specialize in treating personality disorders and working with family members of individuals diagnosed with these issues. I approach counseling from an integrative lens. Primarily, I view many client issues from an existential framework, use person-centered approaches to build relationships, and employ cognitive behavioral tools in the process. I also incorporate postmodern approaches such as solution-focused and narrative therapy as appropriate and have been having a lot of success with acceptance and commitment therapy.
I know it takes a lot of strength to reach out to someone else for help in difficult times. I want to acknowledge the success you have made so far in looking for someone to help you. I am ready to get started when you are!
