Hello, thank you for considering me as a therapist to help you with couples therapy. I have an undergraduate degree in psychology and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker after graduate school in Arizona. I have had over 20 years experience working with couples and families using a systems approach, structural family therapy. In short, the systems approach understands that if one person in a relationship is unhappy or happy for that matter, it must be viewed in context with the other member(s) of the relationship. It’s a way of thinking – success or failure of a marriage is interactional. Problems in the relationship are usually not all the fault of one just one person.
So, looking at a couple as a system of at least two people, I try to access what is going on and address road blocks and strengths impacting the relationship. For example, I may try to find out if a couple ever loved each other; it is not easy to save a marriage if neither party ever loved the other. If they once did have a wonderful relationship I would try to find out what changed and address those elements. Sometimes people grow in totally different directions, which can be just fine as long a each understands and accepts the other. If acceptance is not realistic option, then work can be done to re-balance the relationship. There are many moving parts in a relationship, and if the participants in that marital dyad are motivated then smiles can return. After all, many relationships are suffering simply due to unintentional neglect.
