I am a Counselor licensed in Pennsylvania who has been providing help and hope to people for the last 8 years in a variety of settings and situations from private practice to rehabs and psych wards. As someone coming up on 15 years with my spouse, I know that relationships can be one of the most rewarding and frustrating/hardest parts of life. I have partnered with individuals to work on is learning to fight fair, re-igniting the passion, healthy communication, marriage prep, parenting, blended families, and divorce avoidance/preparation. Overall, I believe a warm, empathetic, and supportive environment is critical for successful change.
So how does couples counseling typically work? It normally starts with getting to know each other and making sure everyone is on the same page and feels comfortable and safe so that we can actually talk through the real issues without fearing being judged. Often this leads to new ideas and tools that can be used to make lasting positive changes. The other important ingredients are accountability and feedback so that we can really see if things are getting better or not. Most of the techniques and theories that I use are rooted in a strength-based and practical approach including brief counseling, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
