In addition to providing treatment for a variety of issues my introduction to relationship/couples counseling was a semester-long, masters level course entitled 'Family Therapy.' This led to being on contract to Child Protective Services providing in-home relationship/couples counseling to at-risk families. This was followed by being on the staff of the army's Family Advocacy Program where I provided counseling to military families, some of whom had children and some did not. I also have worked with couples and families in private practice. I work from the perspective of family mentor, coach and advocate. I treat the individuals in the relationship with equal respect, caring and concern. I do not take sides nor do I judge. I do not define the term 'family' for the people I work with. I allow them to define it for me. In my estimation a family can consist of a single person whose only companion is a pet or it can be a couple of any gender or a household that includes children and even extended family. In short, who ever lives under the same roof can be called a family. I look forward to working with any couple that is experiencing relationship issues.
