My name is Corey Paulson and I am a licensed professional counselor supervisor (LPC-S) in the state of Texas. I received my Bachelor of Science in psychology at Texas A&M with a minor in genetics. While there, I volunteered as a hotline operator and victim escort for the Brazos Valley Sexual Assault Resource Center. I continued my degree earning a Master of the Arts in Counseling at Sam Houston State University while working part-time as a pharmacy technician and witnessing first-hand the rise of the opioid epidemic. After completing my degree, I completed my internship in two years working in my first year in an inpatient psychiatric unit, working with children and adolescents, before transitioning into the outpatient comorbid mental illness and drug addiction unit. I worked briefly with Harris County MHMRA (now the Harris Wellness Center) before I decided on a much-needed change of pace and worked for 7 years at a rural private group practice in Tomball, TX. I most recently spent two years working at Alief ISD as a specialist, counseling children in the special education program grades kindergarten through high school. During the years of 2011 to 2018 I also volunteered as a group facilitator at a children's grief center in Houston, TX.
I use Gottman Marriage and Family Therapy to work with couples in reestablishing a respectful dialogue, and I help them rework their perceptions and care toward their relationship. Gottman in researching many hundred couples over a 13-year period created a wealth of information about how to help couples thrive. Among the findings was that 69% of all arguments are unresolvable and will never reach agreement. In a marriage, the most important thing is the shared goals built despite these conflicts and the positive regard that is demonstrated each and everyday to build the relationship. For all couples experiencing distress and anxiety over breakdowns and conflict in their relationship, I encourage you to read “The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work” and setting an appointment with a Gottman trained therapist to help work through the exercises.
