Hello and welcome to Regain! Thank you for taking the time to read my profile and congratulations on the decision of you both to reach for a better way of living for yourselves.
I received my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Loma Linda University. While there, I also received a separate Master's in Public Health in the area of Health Promotion and Education. I completed an internship at Brigham Young University. From these experiences, I can work with and understand a variety of religious backgrounds. After this, I worked with the seriously mentally ill and in a corrections setting, so there is no problem I have not seen and worked with! This also means that I have learned to take a very non-judgmental stance with any personal background or history. I have specifically worked in private practice with couples, learning that communication, understanding of the other's viewpoint and finding common ground are all key in successful relationships.
My main theoretical orientation is Cognitive-Behavioral as I've found that how a person feels is first determined by the thoughts they are thinking. Many people do not realize that they can choose their thoughts, literally changing their mind by choosing to think more optimistically and positively. It's like exercise for the mind! The Behavioral part comes in when people are shown which behaviors they can emphasize that can improve their mood, such as physical exercise, healthier eating habits, and focused relaxation exercises, including meditation. Change comes, like everything else, with the time and effort applied to it.
I also realize that all people need to have someone hear their story and understand them for who they are. Therefore, I also employ the Humanistic approach of unconditional positive regard, approaching each client as a unique individual who deserves to have their life experience listened to. Added to this, I've worked frequently and successfully with members of the LGBTQ community.
I am excited about the chance of working with you and look forward to hearing from you!
