Welcome! I am very excited that you have taken the first step to finding the support that you need. My name is Amelia Adriana Cervantes and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California. I obtained my Bachelors in Arts with a double major in Psychology and Spanish Literature from the University of California Berkeley and received my Master of Psychology degree in 2007 from Phillips Graduate Institute.
I specialize in the treatment of complex traumas, depression, anxiety, relational issues and parenting. My theoretical orientation is family systems theory, although I also draw from other orientations such as cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment therapy, solution-focused therapy and experiential therapy. My approach to working with couples, and the family system as a whole, comes primarily from my theoretical orientation and the years I have directly worked with couples and families both as a psychotherapist and as a clinical supervisor. I have seen the impact that unresolved generational trauma can have in establishing and maintaining healthy relationships. Every individual has to maneuver a balance between wanting independence and having a secure attachment with others. When this area is out of balance, the individual may find it difficult to engage in a true committed relationship. Often some of the issues that lead couples to seeking counseling involve having communication difficulties, disagreements over day to day decisions and responsibilities, lack of intimacy both emotional and sexual, and an overall sense of dissatisfaction because of unmet personal needs.
Furthermore, I believe in taking a holistic approach to treating my clients by inquiring about their faith, cultural background and practices, sexual identity, health and vitality, and overall satisfaction with current relational dynamics. During a typical session with me, you can expect to be in charge of identifying the topics and areas you would like to explore. The sessions would go at your own pace and based on the needs presented by everyone involved. My goal is to provide you with a safe and secure attachment, to actively listen to your concerns, and to guide you to reach a mutual understanding of your needs, choices and potential solutions. I believe that you are in control of your own healing and that you already have the capacity to achieve the self-regulation that you need to nurture and continue to grow in any relationship.
