Emily Genever has been building a career of clinical service, academia, and research for nearly a decade. While her specialty includes topics of crisis, trauma, and disaster response, she has extensive experience and knowledge in all facets of mental health. Currently, she is contributing to the expansion and growth of a free online mental health resource with BetterHelp.com/advice. Emily has a passion for teaching and sharing knowledge that reduces stigma and empowers individuals to achieve psychological wellness.

Emily has several years of experience writing about mental health topics in academic settings, focusing on research and critiquing existing literature on a variety of mental health-related topics. She looks for every opportunity to add to the knowledge-base through exploration and creative process. Aside from being an online editor and writer, Emily works in the mental health sub-fields of crisis, trauma, and disaster response, spending her time offering supervision and clinical service in settings including emergency rooms, jails, community agencies, and in private practice.


As a third-year doctoral student in Counselor Education and Supervision, Emily has a passion for academia through researching important topics of mental health care and teaching others to provide life-changing treatment. She is in the final steps of earning a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Walden University where she also minors in Crisis and Trauma. She is in the early stages of planning a research study focusing on the topic of crisis clinician wellness as a part of the dissertation requirement in her doctoral program. Being a member of the counseling honor society, it is clear that she takes scholarship seriously and adores the learning process. Emily also holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling.

My philosophy on mental health and wellness revolves around knowledge. I am a big believer that learning creates opportunity. By talking about important topics of mental health and wellness, we can help foster learning and create opportunities of self-improvement and positive social change. With each day there are new things to explore about mental health and wellness including advances in neuroscience, increasing diversity, current events, and changing societal influences. By continuing to explore all aspects of mental health and wellness, there is an increase in available knowledge that supports endless opportunities for growth.
